RDI Focus Area 1:

Production of Sustainable Fuels from Residual Biomass and Waste

RDI Focus area 1 centers on syngas production plants that use gasification to process a wide range of sustainable residual biomass and waste feedstocks.

The objective of the focus area is to develop an integrated biorefinery, utilizing fluidized bed gasification to process diverse feedstocks into sustainable fuels and chemicals, and to decarbonize heavy transport fuels, including those used in maritime and aviation.

Achieving these objectives requires integrating systems and adjusting them to meet each other’s needs to form links in the Net Zero Energy Ecosystem. This work includes:

  • Integrating hydrogen and oxygen from electrolyzer plants to enhance the end product yields.
  • Optimizing operations through the application of advanced sustainable fuel synthesis technologies.
  • Enhancing the process efficiency and economic performance of biorefineries.
